best of 2010

// Business, Children, inspira(shown), Lifestyle, Love, Personal, Portrait, Travel, Wedding

i know, deep down, we all know who we’re the favorite of. a parent/grandparent/crazy aunt say they don’t have favorites, but they do. they’re lying. just watch around birthdays and holidays and you’ll see. some get shiny new electronics and some get hallmark gift cards. they deny, but we all know the truth.

things are a little different in my world. and if i tell you i don’t have favorite images, i’d be lying. cuz i totally do. i have favorites, but for reasons aside from the fact that they are nice pictures. it’s for what you can’t see. (it’s for the raw moment that i somehow saw and got.) (for the new type of shoot i thought i’d try out and ended up loving.) (for the story behind the person & why they’re in front of me. for the time i was at in my life.)  (for the what i learned from that individual.) (for the accident that turned into a composition i couldn’t have done on purpose.) and for shooting just for the love of it.
it’s a very lucky thing that i have visual tangible memories of my year. it’s been a freakin’ good one. one that has transormed my life.

but it’s less about me and more about the people that i’ve gotten to meet. to shoot. to watch and admire so many stories of love; and for all the different ways i’ve seen love take shape. i’ll keep it short. we all know i like to ramble. i cannot cannot express my gratitude to God, to you all, to my family, to the idea of photography itself, it’s made me think ouside of my brain, go against the resistance to wait, to wait for someone else take charge, to make things happen. it’s made me more rounded. and yep, I’ll say it…to me: i am proud of myself. but i wouldn’t be able to do all this alone. you’d be tired of seeing that many self-portraits.  you all, really really please know, have imprinted so much love, encouragement and kindness to me. you’ve allowed me to dive in and not come back up from my passion. you’ve allowed me to live in my passion and see it grow even further.

2010 was the best year of my life.  so far.  here’s to an even better one.

(these are in no order. just how they loaded. that would take way too long to put in order of favorites. no way hosay).

even though we got in trouble from mr. and mrs. bravern, i loved this shoot oooodles.

how many people have walked up and said, “omg who is that guy with the awesome beard?!?”  he has fans.

i always fawn over this image. 2010 top 20 fav.

one of my favorite portraits ever.

so many comments on these two. who would have known a little chalkboard idea would go over so well. they’re quite cute, eh?

love love

such a fun one. best decision to bring on cortney for makeup. everyone loves her.

this happens to be on a few of my business cards. and people always take this one. haha.

one of those, whoa i caught a good moment, photo. love the emotion in this.

the classiest photo of the year. she is regal regal, every inch of her.

a random shoot for no reason, only to jokingly say “I’m gonna go throw these on lululemon’s desk” – the next day they contacted me. now I shoot for them. i need to try that more.

some stand out moments of 2010.

  • designed and released my website. (dude that was like giving birth and i was one proud mama, you all made me so proud).
  • found out i was allergic to some plant in Discovery Park when my lip swelled up to the size of a kiwi while shooting Marita & Andrew. that was super fun.
  • managed to not eat any puppy chow over the holidays
  • added a 35mm, 45mm T/S to my gear. which only makes me want more in my bag.
  • saw one of my best friends get married. cried the whole day. she was gorgeous. and shot a bit of it.
  • my niece was born
  • shot 5 times for lululemon. they’re fun.
  • got to be the feature artist at a gallery. (during my bday month…bonus)
  • designed and released my blog.
  • was recognized by a random girl in a barwho followed my work. which, I know SPU would be sooo proud of.
  • started doing my Inspira(shown) project. which is my most cherished event of my month.
  • poop, i really wanna put my tattoo up here. didn’t happen.
  • made some awesome possum friends who happen tobe bomb diggity doo photographers in seattle.
  • got to shoot my roommate get engaged. and kept it a secret. *bonus*
  • made a ton of people cry. a new bar that means i’m doing good i guess.
  • did tons of illegal stuff on shoots and never got caught. except for all those parking tickets.
  • never dropped my camera (knock on wood).
  • had weddings and e-sessions featured a handful of times around the country, & that one time in England. 🙂

ok i could keep going. so many wonderful things happened. there’s no way to say them all. it was a bomb year though. i want to get better, be better, shoot better, learn more, try new things, meet new people. i want to never stop.

boudoir session: andrea (2 of 2)

// Boudoir

so we’re on to day two. outfit two. i wanted to split them up because they have a difinite different feel and look. I love that she wanted to do this look.  i like both but i think today just goes to show the type of woman and beauty that is seems men tend to like. ok, i’m not the expert, but doesn’t it always seem guys are saying they like you in a tee shirt in jeans?  come on man, appreciate the stilletoes. 🙂 but really, it’s a beautiful thing to hear that a guy likes his wifey in a tank top. no make up. saturday morning. that he thinks she is gorgeous just as she is.even john mayer says he liked his girl in grey sweat pants. it may not be when a woman feels her most glamorous, but it’s refreshing for the ladies to embrace exactly who they are. that is really what boudoir is about. he loves you. you’re stunning. and I feel so honored to be able to help a woman see just how fantastic she is. in an artful way. to look at a photo and be proud of it.  i love being a part of something like that. it’s not all about the lace and frill, because i guarantee you when a woman walks away from this session, she feels beautiful in her skin. she will remember this experience. and she’ll have some photos to remind her of her beauty.

here is andrea. in a tank and cheekies. i think she is lovely. and again, love her smile and laugh in these. i mean, i was there….saying over and over laugh laugh laugh in a dumb voice and having her imitate my laughs. a woman laughing is such a beautiful thing to capture. got a few great giggles. my job is done.

honestly, how cute is she.

yes. that is steam on the windows. yes i took this post shoot. nice.

boudoir session: andrea (1 of 2)

// Boudoir

no, this is not me. my name is andria. and i am not getting married. but she is. and this is a fabulous wedding present.

i actually got in touch with andrea thorugh her pal kalea. kalea and andrea write a lovely little blog called Love Made Visible. they put together perfect posts on all things wedding, love, inspiration boards, ideas, event planning. kalea wrote to me back in the fall when she was over seas and said hello, since then we’ve grown a beautiful internet relationship. well that turned to real life.

so last friday, i checked into Sorrento Hotel – went and shot the surprise bachelorette party – came back up, knocked on room 500 and was greeted by this pretty little face.it was andrea! it’s funny because we have been chatting and planning this for months actually. talking through email. sending lingerie photo ideas. talking themes. and then it was here. wait, did I mention it was friday. we shot saturday morning. yes. we spent the night together. boudoir sleep over! you see, andrea had a wedding dress appt come up and couldnt move it. therefore we had a strict schedule and had to start at 7 am. sleeping there was the natural answer. i thought it would be funny to put my status as “sleeping with my client” but i knew someone wouldn’t get my sarcasm. someone always gets mixed up when i think im being funny.

we grabbed a coke downstairs and got to know each other. now, boudoir is a very intimate type of shoot. obviously. so this was a perfect opportunity to get reeeeeal comfortable. she told me her story. their story. she and clint are set to be wed in October of this year. i always think boudoir is a necessary thing for any married/engaged lady but Andrea has ultimate reason for this shoot. he is in the navy and they spend quite the amount of time apart. they’ve actually never spent more than 10 days together consecutively. he spends his time away. how could this not be any more perfect!?! i absolutely respect not only our troops and the military as a whole, but spending time with andrea gave me some insight to what it’s like to be the other half. the half at home. i love knowing that my time spent with her will give him a fun present and something to take while out at sea. oh i just love that.

so here is her session. i didnt really realize how fantastic her smile was until i was editing. dang.  kalea got to join us for the shoot – which, girls, i totally love you having a friend along! the more the merrier. there are absolutely so so many photos. i’m only showing some. and i’ve said it before but please know that with boudoir, what I show…totally depends on the girl (and guy.) i would never want a woman to be hesitant to shoot being under the misconception that i just put every one and every image up. nope. we could do boudoir and no one could ever know. not even your sister. i truly love this and it’s such a special gift for a marriage, what i show (or don’t show) is covered and talked about. just had to throw that out there. you’re only a very small portion from her shoot and please don’t ruin the surprise for her fiance if you know her. keep your lips sealed.

i know this is a racey topic and some may wonder why i post these. they’re art and i hope they inspire other women to celebrate their beauty, their marriage. take a day to get dolled up. look at a photo of themselves and do a double take. and knock his socks off, of course. PART 2 TOMORROW!

*my normal makeup artist was on the east coast during this shoot….so that’s where i step in. girls: typically we have a MU artist along for your shoot. hope you enjoyed seeing what else my hands can do. hair and makeup!

Boudoir sneak peek

// Boudoir

so here you are, looking at a bathroom window with a lovely lady in it. who would have known it’d be a little piece of art? well. it’s only a sneak peek today. but you will definitely meet her, hear her story, and see her session. I’m currently 76% way through editing hers and on 2 of 4 from last weekends shoots, and I’m heading into 3 days of shooting now today. have had shoots, meetings, conference calls with east coaster lovers (woohoo), and plenty of email writings scheduled for all 7 days of this week. it’s been great but very scheduled. so this is my circle of life. one i love. i’m constantly learning what this is supposed to look like and how I want it to look. it’s a finely tuned dance. i wouldn’t change one bit the little whirlwind swirling around but I’m, of course, back at the word balance. to remain centered. not only professionally organized and on top of my game but also not letting the people and relationships in my life change or dwindle. it’s been fun and refreshing the past few weeks, have been meeting up with new friends, old friends, grabbing coffee, talking. not looking at the clock. spent 2 hours talking to a new zealand gal living here. because as much as i know i want to running things according to my standard in business, I also want to keep a balance and invest in new friends as well as my family here. i feel like I’m always coming back to this. if I’m going to take time away from my work, it’s going to be for people. to talk. to celebrate a cute blonde’s birthday. to hear someone’s story. not watch TV. not to sleep in. so that’s that. a bride i met with this week was talking about being fully with people when you are with them – and it really struck a chord with me for the rest of this week. no matter what’s on your plate or list, when you’re with someone. be with them. give them your attention. your time is a gift. so, now, that’s a challenge and such a great concept to have running thru my mind. especially right now.

so anyways, the creative process can’t be rushed. i wont put the quality of my post-production on the line just to be in a hurry. no. i love the post-production and really a lot goes into it. so i’m editing this little lady’s boudoir and just dying along the way. she is so darling. bomb may actually be the more appropriate word. girls. boudoir season is upon us apparently. it seems i go through seasons of shooting and a lot of boudoir is coming up. yessss. easy way to get me excited. i mean, who wouldn’t want to get this in their christmas stocking? ya. if you have an interest with it…hit me up sister. its an art. its crazy fun. i cant get enough of it.  so. without further chitter chatter……here’s a little sneak peak. you’ll see much more of her soon.

hey now. please know, that with Boudoir, it’s a very client determining thing what you get to see. don’t think I just splash up anything I want. each and every image is ok’d. i love sharing…but this is obviously a different type of work. my clients’ comfort always come first. whether its nothing, everything, a head shot, a shoe. its all client depending.
